Ph.D. in Software and Systems

QUALITY

Introduction

The Internal Quality Assurance System is the responsibility of the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Informáticos's Technical Quality Unit. The PhD in Software and Systems programme also has a Quality Committee composed of the programme coordinator and the director of the Department of Computer Languages and Systems and Software Engineering. The Quality Committee is responsible for implementing suitable measures for monitoring the programme and taking any actions required to assure the quality of the programme outcomes. To do this, the Quality Committee is responsible for applying the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Informáticos's Internal Quality Assurance System (IQAS-FI) to the PhD programme. This system, submitted for certification in April 2008, was approved by ANECA in February 2009. The scope of IQAS-FI covers all the undergraduate, master's and PhD degree programmes that the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Informáticos is responsible for teaching.

The IQAS-FI is composed of a process map. This map defines the overall procedure for assessing student progress and learning outcomes, outlined in the "Outcome measurement and programme improvement process” (PR/ES/2/003). The goal of this process is to describe the mechanisms that the school can use to assure the quality of each of the components of the designed training programmes, including the degree programme objectives and competencies, and adequately maintain and upgrade the educational offer, as well as approve, administer and re-evaluate the programmes and their outcomes. This process includes the implementation of the "Satisfaction studies and surveys process" (PR/SO/5/002), enacted by the Associate Dean's Office for Quality and Strategic Planning to measure and analyse student learning outcomes, the impact of teaching methodologies, and overall satisfaction.

The IQAS-FI includes the "Accredited degree programme phasing out process" (PR/ES/2/006), which specifies the procedure and defines the criteria for phasing out degree programmes at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. This Governance Council-approved process would be applicable if the PhD in Software and Systems were to be phased out.

Both the Technical Quality Unit and the Quality Committee will report the results and findings of the above processes to the PhD in Software and Systems Academic Policy Committee for decision making and implementation of any necessary actions and programme improvements.

Mobility

The programme has a three-member Mobility Committee. This committee coordinates the development of the processes designed within IQAS-FI regarding mobility: “Mobility Process for Students Studying at other Higher Education Institutions” (PR/CL/2.3/001), “Mobility Process for Students from other Higher Educations Studying at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Informáticos” (PR/CL/2.3/002). These processes implement action planning and monitoring mechanisms, as well as support and guidance mechanisms. These processes are managed by the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Informáticos's International Office. The International Office is responsible for managing international relations (agreements, conventions, exchanges, etc.) regarding Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Informáticos students, academic personnel and support personnel.

The measures for promoting student mobility include:

The Mobility Committee is also responsible for coordinating, with the help of the Office of International Relations, the mobility of PhD in Software and Systems academic personnel visiting other institutions and the mobility of academic personnel from other institutions visiting the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Informáticos to do research or deliver seminars, for which purpose funding is sought from the Ministry of Education.

More information on student mobility is available at Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Informáticos. The UPM is also a partner of Columbus S&R Platform.

Promotion

This programme has a Promotion Committee composed of two members plus the programme coordinator. This committee is responsible for enacting processes designed in IQAS-FI to distribute information about the programme, including the “Information Publishing Process” (PR/ES/2/004).
